KHOTSO – COMMUNALISM AND PEACE

Khotso reflects an African traditional ontology which is anthropocentric and sociocentric, that is, based communalism which is based on inseparable interdependence, or transpersonal interconnectivity. Communalism implies co-existing with nature and the world, through existence-in-relation, being-for-self-and-others, being-with-others, being-in-the-world, through a humane and socialist attitude to life.

Khotso means concern for, or an involvement of humankind-with-and-for-others, through an ethos founded on solidarity, togetherness and family spirit. Through Khotso, individuals cannot exist in themselves, in isolation from others, apart from their ontological relationship with other living beings, and animate or inanimate forces.

Khotso therefore entails shared existence, or the human angle of self with-and-for-others in participatory relationship or social existence, welded together through collectivism, togetherness, brotherhood, and team spirit or communal body. Khotso is the basis of the philosophy of reconciliation through dialogue, for self-transcendence and resistance of fragmentation.
